Student Work Placement Program2021 marked the first year for CHRC as a Student Placement (SWP) Program delivery organization. During our first year, CHRC created 312 student placements between June 6, 2021 and April 30, 2022, covering over $1M in wage subsidies with a satisfaction rate of over 80% for students and employers. With the second year of CHRC delivering the SWP Program underway, 184 internships are already being subsidized as of May 1st 2022, and nearly $900,000 in wage subsidies have been awarded to cultural establishments. Young Canada WorksCHRC continues to administer the Young Canada Works (YCW) program for graduates across the country. Once again, employers in all cultural sub-sectors will benefit from this program. The program funds 19 internships with 19 employers in 2022-2023. A fair amount of internship requests that could not be subsidized through the YCW program were redirected towards the student work placement program. At this time, YCW positions are posted on the YCW Job Board and are posted wherever employers choose to post them.
EDI in the Cultural SectorOn June 16, 2022, CHRC participated in the pan-Canadian virtual conference Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Cultural Sector: The Role of Cultural Organizations, an initiative of the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), Concordia University and the Greater Vancouver Professional Theatre Alliance (GVPTA). The topic presented by CHRC was: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility; Demystifying Organizational Policy Writing. Here is a short summary: “Many want to improve Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) in their cultural organizations. Often the starting point and the process is challenging for leaders who are already overwhelmed and/or lack the resources and tools to take action. Using simple and effective theoretical frameworks, CHRC offers to demystify the process that starts with your will and leads to the implementation of organizational policies that support your vision of IDEA. It allows you to reflect on the alignment between this vision, your organization's mission and goals, your organizational culture, the composition of your work teams and your artistic/cultural production.” The podcast version (French only) is available here: https://ediconference.ca/en/podcasts/ Respectful Workplace in the ArtsThe Respectful Workplace in the Arts (RWA) workshops ended on June 30, 2022. The workshop program began in 2019 with funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage. In the last year (2021-2022), 43 workshops were conducted across Canada with over 350 attendees. We thank the Department of Canadian Heritage for funding this project and the opportunity to help Canadian cultural organizations improve workplace practices and behaviours.
CSRR and Mass Culture: ASO Positioning a Future ForwardCHRC’s Cross-Sectoral Recovery Roundtable (CSRR) project has partnered with Mass Culture and their project Arts Service Organisations: Positioning a Future Forward, CSRR members are now able to explore the themes and challenges ASO’s want to focus on in order to find ideas to address these issues. The goal of the project is to better lives for artists and arts workers, increase access to arts experiences, and greater equity for under-represented and marginalised voices. Through ASOs: Positioning a Future Forward, Mass Culture is collecting challenges and ideas that will, through an interactive process, determine 5 priorities for ASOs to explore. Moving forward, this project will demonstrate the synergy between the Cultural sector and other industries or issues not inherently tied to the arts. Cultural Resilience: Using Innovation to Stabilize in Times of CrisisThe Creative City Network of Canada (CCNC) is the leader of a national project, in which CHRC is participating, on cultural organizations’ resilience. In Phase 1, Hill Strategies Research collected and analysed over 200 stories of innovation from organizations and artists during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. For Phase 2, CHRC has created a 3-hour professional development workshop and a written version. The workshops are being delivered across Canada from June to October 2022. A Western Canada tour begins on July 10th to help artists and organizations in the sector to be more resilient and innovative. The Art of Managing Your Career UpdateThe Art of Managing Your Career (TAMYC) has completed the updated written material for 8 artistic disciplines, to provide emerging artists and cultural workers with the resources and practical information to better manage their careers. Translations, revisions and layout will be underway shortly. Stay tuned for phase 2, as workshops will be rolled out across Canada in the fall.
