HRSDC Project Funding

We are pleased to report that HRSDC funding has been confirmed for two important projects which are beginning this month with the music industry and the film and television industry.

Music Marketing Workshops: In response to the music industry's expressed need for training in marketing skills and 'know how', CHRC engaged Shelley Stein-Sacks to develop course content for marketing in the music industry in the 21st century. He produced "Welcome to the Future - A Guide to Marketing Music in the New Economy". In order to promote the use of this excellent material, CHRC will work with Music Industry Associations (MIAs) across the country to deliver 4 pilot workshops based on "Welcome to the Future". More details to follow.

Workshops in Set Safety and Set Etiquette in Film and Television: Over the past year, CHRC's Working Group on Health and Safety in Film and Television has been developing consensus among industry stakeholders, including unions, guilds and employers, around the basic training that workers need to have in Set Safety and Set Etiquette to be hired on film and television sets across the country. Current offerings, practices and provincial regulations have been compiled, and based on that research, course outlines which representatives from across the industry and across the country have agreed on have been developed. CHRC will now engage a consultant to write the course content and deliver 4 workshops, in collaboration with the Regional Training Organizations.

These courses will serve as "standards" for training in Set Safety and Set Etiquette across the country. The Working Group will assess other current and future offerings in these areas to ensure their equivalency in relation to the basic courses. Workers, producers, trainers and funders will have confidence in the competence of workers across the country who have received the recognized training.

Cultural Sector HR Study

The Conference Board of Canada is fully engaged in the Cultural Sector HR Study. Over the summer months they have identified and interviewed key "informants" in all the sub sectors; set up a schedule for Focus Group sessions across the country, to be carried out in the early fall; and begun the process of identifying the participants in the Focus Groups. CHRC's HR Study Steering Committee has been actively responding to questions, offering advice, and providing names and contact information to ensure that the process will fairly capture and reflect the HR concerns of their own particular sub sectors.

The Conference Board consultants have also been reviewing literature and researching other source material on Labour Market Information which they will draw on for their own analysis and recommendations.

One of the first 'deliverables' that the Conference Board is working on now is an economic "shock report" which will describe the impact of the current recession on the cultural sector. We expect this early information to be available in the fall. It will help us all - the sector, CHRC, funders and policy makers - to understand how best to respond to the financial pressures bearing down on artists, cultural workers and cultural employers as a result of the negative economic climate.

Working with PATAC: TAMYC workshop

In the early summer, CHRC received a request from its PATAC partners to work with them to develop course material to teach business skills for self-employed artists, based on The Art of Managing Your Career.

In response to this request CHRC's Board has engaged a consultant to develop a series of workshops based on The Art of Managing Your Career to address the ever pressing need of self-employed artists to acquire practical business skills. A course outline will be developed, existing resources identified, and recommendations made to fill training gaps. PATAC partners, for their part, will send trainers to a train-the-trainer workshop (in late October), and will seek provincial funding (e.g. through the federal/provincial Labour Market Agreements) to deliver the workshops in their communities.

Export Marketing refreshed and updated

"In 2007, Statistics Canada released a study that examined the economic contribution of the culture sector in Canada. The result of the study showed that, in 2003, the sector contributed $43.2 Billion to the Canadian economy, represented 4% of national employment, and accounted for 3.8% of Gross Domestic Product. The United States continues to be Canada's largest trading partner for both goods and services. Of Canada's 2005 cultural exports, 90% of goods, and 73% of services went to the United States."

We are pleased to announce that The Art of Export Marketing which has been a key feature of CHRC's website for several years, has recently been refreshed and updated. It provides online information to assist artists in understanding and managing issues related to Export Marketing of Cultural Products and Services including a competency chart and profile for export marketing skills, useful links, tips and pitfalls, a listing of shows and festivals which offer export marketing opportunities, as well as an export readiness self-assessment.

We remind you that CHRC also offers to training providers workshop material tailored to teach export marketing skills in the cultural sector: Going Global: An Introduction to Export Marketing of Cultural Products and Services, which includes a Facilitator Guide. Initially created in 2002 in collaboration with the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT), this material has been updated to better reflect the current global cultural environment. Training providers can develop Going Global FITT/CHRC workshops on The Art of Export Marketing of Cultural Products and Service, targeted to any of the cultural sub-sectors. Arts service organizations, training institutions, artist-run centres and educational institutions interested in organizing a workshop on Export Marketing of Cultural Products and Services are invited to contact CHRC at

Calling on Educators

Educators are very valued CHRC members. As key partners and stakeholders they are closely involved in strategic planning and product development and dissemination. They are integral to the success of ongoing dialogue between the education sector and industry to ensure that training offerings are current, timely and relevant for emerging and practising artists and cultural workers - at the heart of CHRC's mandate as a sector council.

CHRC has launched a special membership campaign for educators in colleges, universities and private institutions, in order to further strengthen its relationship with these important stakeholders. Drawing to their attention "the wealth of career opportunities that lie in the cultural sector and the importance of guiding students into career paths that offer potential for growth, and are well suited to their individual skills and interests", (see Careers in Culture), CHRC reminds educators that "cultural careers are varied and plentiful and can be exciting and fulfilling for a wide range of individuals". CHRC Board meeting in Montreal

CRHC's Board of Directors is meeting in Montreal on September 25, immediately following the second meeting of the Cultural Sector HR Study, which will also be held in Montreal. The Board will meet with colleagues at the Conseil québécois des ressources humaines en culture and others in the cultural sector while in Montreal.
