Launch of the Study on the Impact of
Digital Technology on the Cultural Sector

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) kick started today a pan-Canadian study on the Impact of Digital Technology on the Cultural Sector. The launch of the study took place during the first meeting of the Steering Committee in Montréal. The list of Committee members can be found here.

CHRC Board member and Steering Committee Chair, Pat Feheley, noted that "the impact of digital technology is probably the biggest single issue facing the cultural sector at this time. In varying degrees, digital technology is affecting the infrastructures of the sub-sectors, the modus operandi of their businesses, the skills requirements of employers and the training needs of artists and cultural workers across the sector and across the country."

The study, spearheaded by the Nordicity Group, aims to measure the impact of technology on the labour force in the eight sub-sectors: visual arts and crafts, live performing arts, film and television, broadcasting, writing and publishing, music and sound recording, heritage (archives, libraries, museums and built heritage) and digital media. The firm will also review the various elements of the creative chain, which includes the following: creation, production, manufacturing, distribution/dissemination, and preservation in not-for-profit and for-profit businesses and organizations.

During the next eight months, Nordicity will hold consultations across Canada with leaders in the cultural sector to identify HR issues in the sector through surveys and interviews.
